Quick Answer
Use 36 degree diamonds for sharp points in EPP stars or geometric designs. The acute angle requires careful basting and joining to avoid fabric bunching.
Why 36 Degree Diamonds Create Sharp Points
A 36 degree diamond has a very narrow angle, making it ideal for sharp star points, kaleidoscope motifs, and spoked patterns. The small angle means each piece contributes to a tight, precise point when joined correctly.
The trade-off: sharp angles are more prone to fabric bulk and misalignment. You need to baste with smaller stitches and press seams carefully to keep points crisp.
How to Sew 36 Degree Diamonds for Sharp EPP Angles
- Baste with Small Stitches at the Point: Fold fabric over the diamond and baste with stitches no larger than 1/8 inch (3 mm) from the point. This prevents fabric from slipping off the paper when you join pieces. A common mistake: basting too far from the point causes fabric to pull away when stitching.
- Join Pieces Point-to-Point First: Align the sharp points of two diamonds and stitch from the point inward toward the wider end. Use a whipstitch with thread no longer than 18 inches to avoid tangling. Start at the point to keep the tip aligned; starting at the wide end can shift the point out of position.
- Press Seams Open at the Point: After joining, press the seam flat with your fingernail or a mini iron, working from the point outward. This reduces bulk and helps the point lie flat. Avoid pressing toward one side, which can distort the sharp angle.
- Trim Fabric Close at the Back: Once the block is complete, trim the fabric seam allowance to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) around the diamond points. This reduces bulk when joining blocks. Leaving too much fabric at the point makes subsequent joins bulky and imprecise.
